24 Hours

Eric grimaced and groaned as he peeled his eyes open. His hand shot up to block the bright beam shining though a hole in the curtain. “What the…”

When he rolled to his side away from the light he felt the thrumming of a hangover. This seemed more than just too much Johnny Walker. Eric sat up and tried to focus though the haze in his mind.

The room wasn’t his. He looked around the cheap dive of a hotel room and immediately wanted a shower. There was no memory of coming here. He wouldn’t set up roaches to stay in the, he looked at the sticker on the front of the telephone, Fox Trot Motel.

The last thing he remembered was standing at the bar talking to a hot blonde with kissable pouty lips.

His foot brushed something on the floor. He reached down and picked up a black satin bra. Oh, I can’t have forgotten this?

Hand combing though his hair, he stood and followed the trail of female clothing to the bathroom door. From behind the practically closed door, he could hear the shower running. Puffs of steam hit his skin as he reached for the knob.

He noticed a square of white gauze taped to his arm. What the hell?

Eric yanked off the tape. He flinched as each hair pulled and stung, but not as much as what he saw. A tattoo in western style letters that read, “24 hours”. What did that mean?  He licked his thumb and rubbed at the ink.

It was raw and sore but the ink didn’t even smudge. It was a real tat, now he was angry as he grabbed the door and pulled it open. “Okay, I want some… answers.”

Eric stopped. There was a rancid smell in the steamy air. His breath stilled as his mind tried to accept the sight. The tub was half filled with bloody water and the body of a lifeless woman.

Her dark hair caked with blood rested over her paled skin, the color of the porcelain tub. Blank and staring her eyes locked on his and he was finally able to see the gaping wound on her head.

Eric recognized her as the bartender from the club. He stumbled back into the bedroom shaking his head. “No… no, no, no, this isn’t happening. I didn’t do anything… oh God what happened?”

His hand drug across the top of the dresser, a set of keys pushed to the floor with a clank that made him jump and turn.
Out of here, he had to get out of here. He searched the room for his things. His clothes had been neatly folded and placed in the top dresser drawer. His wallet was still tucked into the back pocket of his jeans. He checked it, all his cards and money were there.

Eric jerked the pants on and scanned the room. His cell phone was missing; maybe it’s in the car. He stooped to grab the keys from the floor then paused. They weren’t his keys.

Frantic he searched the room he shouldn’t be here. The maid would come and he would be caught. They would haul him off to jail for murder. He didn’t kill her, at least he doesn’t think so.

He doesn’t remember anything past drinks at the bar. What couldn’t he remember? He must have been drugged, that’s the reason he felt hazy. Eric dropped to his knees and looked under the bed. “Where are those keys?”

He stopped searching when he heard a cell phone ringing from inside the dresser. He began to pull open the drawers until he came to a cell phone still ringing and a photograph of him and the bartender kissing in the parking lot of the motel.

It was the same girl in the tub. No, this girl was smiling and her eyes had life in them. He remembers flirting with her when he picked up drinks for his friends.

The ringing stopped but Eric didn’t notice his eyes were locked on that photograph. He picked it up ripping it in pieces. He started to drop it into the trash. They can put it back together.

Instead, he crammed the pieces into his jeans pocket. He paced the room trying to think. He cannot leave any trace… he had just left his prints on every surface looking for his keys.

Eric ran into the bathroom and grabbed a towel to wipe down the room when the strange phone in the drawer rang again, this time with a text. He looked at the screen on the phone as it lay in the drawer.

“Eric, answer the phone.”

They knew his name. He breathed a sigh of relief; it had all been a prank. Jerks, he thought. The phone rang and he answered this time. “You guys are in so much trouble. How much did you pay that girl to play dead? “

The voice on the other end of the call sent a chill down his spine. “I know what you did last night, Eric. Help me and I will make sure no one else knows.”

Hand shaking he combed though his hair and paced. His heart raced, his eyes darted to the bathroom, nothing happened… nothing happened last night.  “Know what? You don’t know anything. Who is this?”

Breathing was the only sound he heard though the phone. “I don’t know what you’re talking about, I didn’t do anything. Nothing happened. Do you hear me? Nothing… happened.”

The voice was calm as it spoke low, the sound like gravel turned into words. “I know, the police will know, unless you do as I say for 24 hours.”

Eric looked down at the tattoo on his arm. He was trapped there was no other way out other than to call the cops. Then he has to hope they can find evidence of a real killer. Unless…

He had no memory of last night. What if whatever they slipped him made him do something? What if he is the killer? Coerced or not the rest of his life would be in a 10x10 cell.

He was boxed in, there was nothing he could do. Except buy time to try and remember. “What do you want?”

To Be Continued…..

Book Blogger Hop Friday: Books to Movies Good and Bad

Yay it's Friday and time for another Book Blogger Hop! Hosted by the wonderful Crazy-For-Books.com Today's question is about book to movie adaptations.

"What book-to-movie adaption have you most liked?

I have a few book to screen movies that I have loved. I think one of my favorites was Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe. It was adapted into the film Fried Green Tomatoes starring Kathy Bates and Jessica Tandy.

Both book and movie will have you laughing out loud and grinning ear. Evelyn is a mild mannered house wife who visits her husbands aunt in the nursing home. Until she meets Ninny Threadgoode who begins to tell her the story of Idgie Threadgoode's life.

Evelyn begins to grow into the woman she's always wanted to be with the mighty cry of, "Tawanda!"

You'll laugh until your in tears with this great story of love, friendship, and being just a little different.

 Which have you disliked?"

I must say some of the best books/ stories to film I have seen have been adaptations of Steven King's work. On the other hand some of the worst adaptations I've seen have come from there as well. Not by fault of the novel or story, but the screen writer just couldn't get the job done to bring King's vision to life.

A few of these adaptations have even been redone such as The Shining. It was remade to follow the book more closely. Though I have to admit I do like the original film. Can't go wrong with Jack Nicholson as your leading man... even though he ended up a crazed murder.  REDRUM

My absolute least favorite early adaptation for a King novel was Salem's Lot. I felt like have the movie was missing and it didn't capture the real fear of a vampire being discovered in town.

Misery missed the mark for me too. There were just too many small changes for me to enjoy that one.

Even if it's not always on the mark (such as Harry Potter) seeing your favorite book coming to life can be an enjoyable night at the movies. As a matter of fact I think tonight I'll pop the corn and watch a couple of my favorites.

The Secret Window, starring Johnny Depp and adapted from a short story by Steven King , and, The Silver Brumby, starting Russell Crowe and adapted from The Sliver Brumby books written by Elyne Mitchell

Your latest book Guilty As Charged was just released on April 16tt. Please tell us about it:

Guilty As Charged
is the first book in the Bradford Sisters Trilogy.
Nicole Bradford, the heroine, has had the responsibility of raising her two sisters since their parents died in a tragic accident seven years ago. Now her sisters are all grown up and she can finally concentrate on a life of her own.
Max Paradis, the hero, is returning home after two long years away. He left to escape the pain of a bitter divorce.  He’s back because he misses his family and friends. It’s time to start over.
Passion ignites between Nicole and Max the second they lay eyes on each other. Nicole is sweet and loving is sweet and loving and everything that Max is looking for. But when a secret from her past is revealed will she be found innocent or is she guilty as charged?

Do you have a favorite scene in the book?

I have two. Here is a short excerpt from both for your reading pleasure:

Favorite scene 1: There’s no one here, she noted as she got out of the car and made her way to the lobby door, although she hadn’t really expected anyone to be. She held her employee badge to the scanner. There was a buzzing sound and a click indicating the door was now unlocked. After retrieving the files from her office, she went to the conference room. There was a large table in there, which had plenty of room for her to spread out the information she needed to look at.

Several hours passed by and her stomach began to growl. It’s one-thirty now, she noted after a quick glance at her watch. It’s time for something to eat. Standing, she stretched from side to side, then walked down the hall to get the lunch she’d thrown together hastily before leaving this morning. A piece of leftover lasagna from Thursday’s dinner and the rest of the salad they’d had. She stopped at the microwave to heat the lasagna, then went back to the conference room to eat. Her eyes rounded when she noticed someone sitting at the table, his back facing her.

“Excuse me, can I help you?” The man turned around and gave her a brilliant smile. She frowned. “M-Max? But how? I thought you were out of the country?”

“Not anymore,” he drawled.

She had recognized him from the picture in Reed’s office, but he probably had no idea who she was. “I’m sorry, I’m N—”

Rising to his feet he said, “I know who you are. Reed told me all about you on the phone last night. But how did you recognize me? We’ve never met.”

Nicole blushed. “Oh, um, I’ve seen pictures—on Reed’s desk.”

“I see.”

“I don’t understand what you’re doing here. I thought you were calling from
Saudi Arabia last night?”

“I was on the plane heading home, actually. When Reed told me about the engagement, I told him I would meet you here today.”

“But why? I don’t understand. Reed never said anything.”

He walked slowly to where she was standing, never once dropping his gaze from her. “You know, my brother didn’t do you justice when he described you. You’re not just beautiful—you’re gorgeous.”

Her eyes widened in astonishment. She didn’t quite know how to respond to a statement like that. No one had ever said anything like that to her before. She lowered her lashes and murmured hesitantly, “Thank you.”

She had always thought that Max was good-looking, but to see him in person, he was spectacular. He was taller than Reed—who was just under six feet—by about three or four inches. His eyes were a deep blue and mesmerizing, which drew her eyes back to his. His hair was thick, luxuriant and
midnight black. She itched to run her fingers through it.

He tucked a stray lock of her own rich, chestnut hair behind her ear. The small gesture made her realize just how close he was to her; close enough that she could smell a hint of the expensive cologne he was wearing. She inhaled deeply. His head lowered to hers. He’s going to kiss me, she acknowledged inwardly. And I’m not going to try and stop him because I want him to. From the first moment she’d seen him in the picture on Reed’s desk, she’d wondered what it would be like to be kissed by him. His lips met hers and she closed her eyes and gave herself up to pure bliss. She lifted her arms around his neck and he pulled her closer. He’s an incredible kisser, she acknowledged dizzily, and that was the last coherent thought she had as he deepened the kiss.

Favorite scene 2: The door to Reed’s office burst open, crashing against the adjoining wall. Reed looked up. Nicole turned to see who had made all the noise. Max stood in the opening, a thunderous expression on his face.

“Well, big brother, what can we do for you?” Reed queried in a casual tone.

Max didn’t answer; he just stood glaring at Nicole.

“M–Max, you’re home early.”

“Surprise,” he said sarcastically.

“What the hell is wrong with you?” Reed asked.

Instead of answering, he strode into the room and stopped in front of Nicole.

Suddenly, she was on full alert. She noticed the large manila envelope in his hand. The letterhead on the front made her sick with shock.

“Care to explain this?” he drawled, his tone at odds with the aggression emanating from every fiber of his being.

“What is it?” Reed asked a confused look on his face.

It was what she feared most. Legal documents, containing, no doubt, her arrest record and everything else about that horrible incident that had happened so long ago.

“Well?” Max asked ominously.

Nicole couldn’t speak. What could she say? It was all there in black and white.

After several moments of electrifying silence, Max turned his attention to Reed. “Are you aware you’ve hired a convicted felon, little brother?”

“I am not a convicted felon.”

He turned toward her. “I stand corrected, you were never convicted, however¾” Nicole made to speak, but Max overrode her efforts. His attention was on Reed again as he continued. “As I was saying, are you aware that you’ve hired a drug smuggler?”

Reed’s eyes opened wide and Nicole cringed in her seat.

She shot to her feet. “That’s enough.  You know nothing about what happened.”

“Oh, you’re ex-lover Carlo was more than happy to tell me what happened when he met me at the airport this morning. He told me what you’re really like. You present this sweet, innocent façade to the world, but these—” He picked up one of the documents that lay strewn across the desk and threw it at her. “These tell the truth about who you really are.”

“Max, you can’t be serious. There’s got to be some mistake.”

“There’s no mistake, little brother. See, she’s not even going to deny it.”

Nicole glared at him, furious now, her body shaking with anger. “You think just because…” Her voice trailed off.  She threw her hands in the air, a gesture of defeat, and then slumped into her chair. What was the use in trying to explain?  He wasn’t going to believe her. No one had believed her before. No matter how hard she had tried to convince them that she was innocent of any wrongdoing. She stood again and addressed Reed. “You’ll have my resignation on your desk tomorrow morning. I’m sorry.”  She turned and walked out the door with her head held high.

What would you say is your most interesting writing quirk?

I don’t write chapters sequentially. If I get a scene into my head I get it down on paper then go back during the editing process to make sure I have a cohesive story.

What do you think is the most important to remember when writing romance?

For me a story has to have passion, drama and romance. And, of course it has to have a happy ending.

Do you plot/outline a book before writing or write by the seat of your pants?
I write by the seat of my pants. I don’t use an outline but I do mull things over in my mind so that I have some kind of sequence of events but, as I mentioned above, I don’t necessarily write the chapters in sequence.

Have you always written romance or do you write other genres as well?

I have always written contemporary romance, although, I just finished a story that has a paranormal flavor to it. It’s entitled Visions and is out for consideration now (I’m keeping my fingers crossed and my toes for good measure!)

What do you feel is the hardest part about writing or being a writer?

Getting published!

If you could have a dinner- date with one of your heroes which one would it be and why?

That’s a tough one because I like all my heroes, but I think I’d like to have a romantic dinner with Max Paradis – the hero from Guilty As Charged. He’s a pretty sexy guy!

What is your favorite word?

Passion.

If your book Guilty As Charged were to be made into a movie, who would you pick to play your hero and heroine?

Rachel McAdams for the heroine- Nicole Bradford
Patrick Dempsey for the hero – Max Paradis

What’s your favorite guilty pleasure?

Chocolate!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Forgotten

The old shed stood amongst the wild growth. The paint worn, siding rusted with time telling the world it has been forgotten. What secrets are inside these simple four walls? Old tools, holiday decorations, toys now outgrown or boxes of memories. Or perhaps secrets better left forgotten.

Book Blogger Hop Friday May 20

Whew, it has been a busy life lately with lots of ups and downs. But all that is shoved aside for a BOOK PARTY! That's right it's time for another fantastic Book Blogger Hop. This week's bookish question is…..

"If you were given the chance to spend one day in a fictional world (from a book), which book would it be from and what would that place be?"
My Answer…..
I think I would like to spend a day in the fictional world of JD Robb's In Death series. My Sis in Heart Rose got me hooked on this series. I usually don't care for reading futuristic style books but this one is different. The world is written in a way that makes it subtle. Not in your face sci fi like say Star Trek.

But I like the idea of walking into the kitchen and telling the 'autochef' what I want for dinner. Gliding through the streets in flying cars and being able to take flights to the moon or other planets for a couple hours then jetting back home.
The people and places aren't really all that different from home but there's a few more conveniences to enjoy J Oh yeah I forgot to mention Rorke would sooo be my tour guide for the day. *wink

Gladiator's Pen Welcomes Author Jason Beymer to the Arena

Gladiator's Pen welcomes Jason Beymer to the arena today as his latest work Nether hits the shelves. Pour a tall glass and prop up your feet as we chat with Jason in the arena.

Author Jason Beymer
Who is Jason Beymer?
A permanent fixture at his local coffeehouse, Jason Beymer hunches over his laptop in a caffeine-induced frenzy, jowls slick with muse. He injects comedy into the urban and traditional fantasy genres like a squeeze of lemon into ice water: tart, yet refreshing. When not pounding on his keyboard, Jason worships at the feet of Ray Bradbury, and engages in an unhealthy obsession with Grace Park and Tricia Helfer.

Tell us three things not many people know about Jason Beymer:
1) I secretly love Star Trek 5 and The Last Action Hero. And I think Woody Allen was the best James Bond ever.
 2) I think the older Michele Forbes gets, the hotter she looks.
 3) I was once drunk enough to mistake a tall glass of Jagermeister for Pepsi.

You have a book releasing today, Nether. Where did you get the idea for this story?
I wanted to write a comedy incorporating all sorts of themes: shapeshifters, talking dogs, zombies, teenage demons...even a jaunt through the afterlife. My dog inspired Nether. I have a 12-year old miniature dachshund named Poe. In Nether, her name is Pearl. The only difference between them is that Pearl can talk. Oh, and she eats people.

Do you have a favorite scene you can share?
I had lots of favorite scenes in my first novel, Rogue's Curse, but even more in Nether. At one point, the main character, Burklin, bathes a zombie. This was a fun scene to write. Here's a snippet:

Burklin turned on the faucet, careful not to make the water too hot. It roared as it slammed against the porcelain, filling the tub around her. He sat on the toilet and watched the woman contort and spasm, her eyes fixed on his. Burklin took several deep breaths. The psychiatrist had told him to do this. Breathe. Breathing good. Relax. He had everything under control.

"Please," she said. Her mouth disappeared under the water. The word bubbled to the surface. The water blackened in florets around her neck and the gashes in her back.

"Shh." Burklin grabbed a bottle of economy-sized shampoo and emptied it into the tub. He swirled it and produced thousands of bubbles. "See? Clean."

If you could spend a day inside your book would you?
Oh, hells no. I torture my characters. They'd kill me if I stepped foot into their books.

When did you first know you were a writer?
I used to write and rewrite the Tale of Peter Rabbit before I even knew how to construct a letter. Then I moved onto my own Choose your own Adventure knock-offs. I remember being inspired by Raiders of the Lost Ark after seeing it in the theater. I wanted to trump Spielberg, and write a book with way more action than his movie. At 8-years old, my masterpiece was a "book" called Doctor Death. All my stories ended with the good dude trying to escape before the bad dude's lair blew up.

What do you do to research for a book like Nether or Rogue's Curse?
Research is for suckers and...er...I mean, I did lots of research for both books. For Rogue's Curse I spent considerable time with the Bible. The focal point of Rogue's Curse is a book called the Holy Biblum, which is an extremely loose translation of the Bible. Ever since the Rapture, 2000 years ago, the Bible has changed. As the author, I got to make those edits (Yay!). Also I researched the fantasy genre, in order to satirize it right. Rogue's Curse isn't high fantasy at all--it's a parody of it.

For Nether, I researched politics, zombies, different theories on the afterlife, demons, and religion. A lot of time went into ensuring accuracy.

What’s your favorite word?
Cortexiphan

The eternal debate… Coke or Pepsi?
RC Cola.

Do you have a writing ritual?
I wake up at 5:00 am every morning, shower, dress (that's the important part), then drive to Starbucks by 5:30 am when it opens. I sit in the comfy red chair, put on my headphones and write until about 7:30 am. You'd be surprised how much writing fodder walks through those doors. Do you need help with a character? How about a selfish, belligerent mommy with three disrespectful sugared-up children? Just look up from your laptop. Then I go home and wake my six-year old, dress her (that's the important part), feed her, and take her to school. I'm at my most creative in the morning. By noon, my creativity is shot.

Where can we find Nether and Rogue's Curse?
Rogue's Curse (http://www.beerandtv.com/rogues-curse) is available just about everywhere--Amazon, B&N, Fictionwise, Lyrical Press, and many more.

Nether (http://www.beerandtv.com/nether) is available through Amazon, Omnilit and the Lyrical Press store. It will be available everywhere in the coming months.

Where can we find Jason Beymer on the web or upcoming events?
The best place to keep up with me is on my blog and Twitter:

Twitter: @beerandtv
Email: jason@beerandtv.com

Do you have anything you would like to add for your readers or fellow writers?

Please check out the blurbs and excerpts for my books. I'd love it if you read them, then sent me an email to let me know what you thought.

Here's a little more about Rogue's Curse:

Rogue's Curse is a dark comedy set 2000 years after the Rapture. A rogue named Doban discovers the talisman responsible for the Rapture and it embeds itself to his skin. Now the entire kingdom is after him. Doban must turn to the only woman who ever loved him—a woman he once left to die in a tomb—for help. Rogue's Curse has tons of sex, monsters, palace politics, romance, humor and adventure.

But mainly the focus is on the relationship between Mona and Doban. What has happened in the two years since he left her to die in the tomb? How did she survive and escape? And most importantly, can they set aside their differences long enough to stop a second Rapture? At its heart, Rogue's Curse is about second chances, and whether or not we repeat past mistakes when presented the opportunity.

2000 years after the Rapture, the world still sucks.

Here's a little more about Nether.

One suburban night. One stubborn corpse. One golden opportunity.

Burklin had it all: a spacious two-story house, a shapeshifting wife, a wide open future. That is, until his father ripped out his soul and trapped it inside an opinionated dachshund. Now he's lost everything, leaving him a slave on mop-up duty for a homicidal teenage demon. His father is sleeping with his ex, the possessed dachshund won't stop talking, and the cleanup jobs keep getting messier. Burklin would give anything to have his life back--even if it means turning against his manipulative father and destroying their chance of winning the Nether's Demon Lord Sweepstakes.

Opportunity knocks with a dead woman's hand. When the demon's latest victim won't stay dead, the rules of life and death change. Freedom lies within Burklin's reach, but to get it he'll have to defy his father, the ex-wife he still loves, and the Nether itself.

Just how far is he willing to go?

Thank you Jason for visiting the Gladiator's Pen arena. We hope you'll join us again. Alright Readers you've been given a taste of the goodness these books offer so what are you waiting for grab one of those links and get reading!

Autumn Signs

Quiet was the day, the only sounds being the rustling of trees in the wind, the soft crunch of leaves underfoot. Autumn the season of change had begun.
These woods have changed since his first walk though them so long ago. Saplings now become tall trees, their leaves turning golden as they fall to the earth.  The sun peeked though the wood setting the trees a glow.
The hollow of a pine filled with acorns, a woodland creature’s winter store. Soon the mild temperatures would turn into bitter cold winter. Snow replacing yellow and orange leaves on the branches.
The sound of a heavy branch falling caught his attention. His heart sped as he stepped off the trail to inspect. Such paranoid caution had kept him alive for so long.
Creaking of wood in the stiff breeze led him to the source. A large oak, trunk blacked and split from a summer storm. Lightning had carved a dark line down the thick trunk to the roots.
As his fingers traced the scared bark it felt like a sign, a sign of dark days ahead. With a sigh he turned back to the trail perhaps he can pretend the earlier peace of his walk was never disturbed. Change was coming but not yet, he would enjoy the quiet autumn day.
